Make a Fractal - Koch Snowflake

If your students enjoy art or being creative, they should have a good time with this project.  They'll get a chance to create a very cool shape in math called a fractal.

Parachute Math Project (from pbs/mathline.org)

Aw Chute! is a pretty cool idea of a math project.  Most students probably have never jumped out of a plane using a parachute... So they may get a kick out of this project.

Students will design and construct parachutes.  Afterwards they will use the distance formula to determine the rate of descent and with this information look for similarities in design.  On this page you'll find a quick overview of this math project and the what we like about it.  Get the the full details of the project

Project Objectives

Students will gain experience using the distance formula to determine the rate of descent and with this information look for similarities in design.

What We Like

I like this project because students get to design and construct their own parachutes.  And you don't need to be a rocket scientist either.  As a matter of fact, lots of kids have done something like this at one point but just not with a math component.

Students should work in teams of two.  The goal of each team is to create a parachute that will have the maximum amount of “hang time” which is defined as the amount of time the parachute is suspended in air from the time it is released until the time it hits the floor.

So here's where students can use their own creativity and design their parachutes to be any shape they choose.

What You Will Need

  • Plastic trash bag
  • Pair of scissors
  • Yard/Meter stick
  • String
  • Magic marker
  • Paper clip or tape
  • Aw Chute Data Chart
  • Several stopwatches (for the class)
  • Class Chart
  • Circular objects (frisbee, bowl for tracing)

Below is a look at the Aw Chute! Data Chart that you can print out after clicking over to the details page.

So go ahead and give it a try and let us know what you think.  And then be sure to check back for new projects that we'll be adding.
